Psychedelics: Science & the Law

Psilocybin and related substances explained — the science, the research, and Australia’s strict legal framework. Law-forward and education-only.

General information only and not a substitute for professional medical advice. Always consult a qualified health practitioner before making decisions about your health or treatment.

Psychedelics are among the most tightly regulated substances in Australia. Psilocybin is a Schedule 9 (prohibited) substance — possession or use is a criminal offence — except when prescribed by an Authorised Prescriber psychiatrist (Schedule 8) for specific conditions since 1 July 2023.

The pages below explain the underlying science, the research landscape and the law in neutral terms. None of this is medical advice, none of it is a how-to, and nothing here encourages unlawful use.
