Australian legal status , read first. Psilocybin and LSD are classified as Schedule 9 (Prohibited Substance) under the Poisons Standard (the document that gives effect to Australia's national drugs scheduling framework, administered by the Therapeutic Goods Administration). Since 1 July 2023, a narrow exception permits TGA-authorised psychiatrists , operating under the Authorised Prescriber scheme , to prescribe psilocybin (Schedule 8, controlled drug) for specific diagnosed conditions within an approved clinical context only. Outside that pathway, any possession, use, or supply of psilocybin or LSD constitutes a criminal offence under state and territory law. Microdosing as a self-directed, community practice does not fall within the Authorised Prescriber exception.
What the term describes. In pharmacological and survey literature, "microdosing" denotes the repeated, sub-hallucinogenic administration of a psychedelic compound; typically reported in studies as roughly one-tenth of a dose associated with full perceptual effects. Because no perceptual disruption is intended, proponents in self-report studies have described it as compatible with ordinary daily functioning. The doses reported across published observational studies (such as Szigeti et al., 2021, published in eLife) are not standardised, are not regulated, and should not be interpreted as a protocol endorsed by any Australian regulatory or medical body.
Research status and limitations. Academic interest in microdosing has grown since approximately 2015, driven largely by self-report surveys and a small number of placebo-controlled studies. The evidence base remains limited: most human studies are short-duration, rely on self-selected and self-reporting participants, cannot use pharmaceutical-grade illicit substances in community settings, and have not established causality for any outcome. The Australian Drug Foundation and peer-reviewed literature note that potential adverse effects, including anxiety, perceptual disturbance, and cardiovascular changes, have been reported even at sub-threshold doses. No microdosing product or protocol has been approved by the TGA for any indication.
Safety and harm-reduction note. Because psilocybin and LSD obtained outside a licensed clinical supply chain are unregulated, their purity, concentration, and actual identity cannot be verified. Contamination, mislabelling, and dose variability are documented risks. Individuals with a personal or family history of psychosis or certain cardiovascular conditions face particular uncertainty.
