Δ10-THC shares the same molecular formula as delta-9-THC (C₂₁H₃₀O₂) but carries its double bond at the 10,10a position rather than the 9,10 position. This subtle shift in geometry alters the three-dimensional shape of the molecule and, by extension, how it fits the binding pocket of cannabinoid receptors. In cannabis plant material, concentrations are so low that Δ10-THC is rarely detected without sensitive analytical methods; most commercial quantities are produced semi-synthetically by isomerising CBD or delta-9-THC isolate under acidic conditions.
At the receptor level, Δ10-THC is understood to act as a partial agonist at CB1 and CB2 receptors , the two primary G-protein-coupled receptors of the endocannabinoid system , in a manner broadly similar to other THC isomers. Binding affinity and intrinsic efficacy at CB1 are generally considered lower than those of delta-9-THC, though peer-reviewed pharmacokinetic and receptor-binding data specific to Δ10-THC remain sparse. Most characterisation to date has been conducted in vitro or inferred from structural analogy with better-studied isomers.
Research status is preliminary. As of 2025, no clinical trials have been registered or published examining Δ10-THC in human subjects, and no regulatory authority , including Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA); has evaluated or approved any Δ10-THC-containing product for therapeutic use. Under Australia's Poisons Standard, tetrahydrocannabinol isomers are captured within the Schedule 8 (controlled drug) and Schedule 9 (prohibited substance) listings depending on context; products containing Δ10-THC without TGA approval sit outside lawful supply channels.
Because large-scale production relies on chemical isomerisation rather than direct plant extraction, product purity and the identity of reaction by-products are active analytical concerns. Independent laboratory testing has identified uncharacterised contaminants in some isomer-derived cannabinoid products, a point the TGA has flagged in broader communications about unapproved cannabinoid goods.
