CBC (CBC)

Cannabichromene (CBC) is a non-intoxicating phytocannabinoid found in Cannabis sativa L. that does not bind strongly to CB1 or CB2 receptors but interacts with several other receptor targets, and ranks among the most abundant cannabinoids in the plant alongside CBD and THC.

CBC shares the same biosynthetic origin as THC and CBD. All three are derived from cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), the so-called "mother cannabinoid." An enzyme-driven cyclisation reaction converts CBGA into cannabichromenic acid (CBCA), which then undergoes decarboxylation , via heat or prolonged UV exposure , to yield the neutral form, CBC. Because the cyclisation pathway differs from that producing THCA or CBDA, CBC ends up with a distinct molecular ring structure, which largely accounts for its different receptor-binding profile.

Unlike THC, CBC has negligible affinity for the classical cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2. Research published in peer-reviewed literature has identified interactions with transient receptor potential (TRP) channels , specifically TRPA1 and TRPV1; as well as with TRPV4, and some evidence points to activity at GPR55 receptors. These are the same receptor families that other non-intoxicating cannabinoids, including CBD, are known to engage with, though the binding dynamics and downstream signalling of CBC remain less characterised than those of CBD or THC.

CBC concentrations vary considerably across cannabis chemotypes. Some industrial hemp cultivars produce relatively high CBCA proportions, whilst drug-type cannabis strains typically carry much lower levels. The compound is detectable in both the flower and leaf material, with the acid precursor CBCA predominating in fresh, uncured plant matter. Research into CBC as an isolated compound is still at an early stage; most published work has been conducted in cell cultures or animal models, and the findings carry the usual limitations of preclinical data, they do not establish effects in humans.

In Australia, CBC is present in cannabis plant material that falls under Schedule 4 (prescription-only) or Schedule 8 (controlled drug) of the Poisons Standard, depending on preparation and intended use. Isolated CBC is not separately listed as a therapeutic agent approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), and no standalone CBC product appears on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG). Access to cannabis-derived preparations containing CBC would follow the same regulatory pathways as other medicinal cannabis products: the TGA's Special Access Scheme (SAS) or Authorised Prescriber framework.
